A few things worth knowing about currency conversion
A currency converter is really just a fast bridge between two numbers — it takes an amount in one currency and tells you the equivalent in another, using the current exchange rate between them. That makes it useful anywhere you're thinking in one currency but need to reason in another: sizing up a trip budget, comparing a supplier's quote, or just understanding what a price abroad actually costs back home.
Exchange rates aren't fixed — they move throughout the day as currencies trade against each other on global markets, which is why "the" exchange rate is really a moving target rather than a single fixed number. The rate this tool shows is the mid-market rate: the midpoint between what buyers and sellers are trading a currency pair at, with no markup added. Banks, card networks and payment providers almost always apply their own margin on top of that mid-market rate, which is a normal part of how they price currency exchange — so the amount that actually lands in an account after a real transfer or card charge is usually a little different from the number a converter shows.
That's the main distinction worth keeping in mind: this tool is built for planning and comparison — get a fast, reasonable estimate before you commit to anything — not for finalizing a real transaction. When money is actually moving, the bank or payment provider handling that specific transfer is the one that determines the exact rate that applies, and it's worth checking that rate directly with them rather than assuming it will match a reference number exactly.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the exchange rates come from?
This tool fetches live exchange rates from a public exchange rate API when the page loads. If that request fails or the API is unavailable, it automatically falls back to a set of fixed, approximate rates built into the tool, and shows a notice so you know the numbers aren't live.
Why is the rate here different from what my bank or card charged me?
This tool shows the mid-market rate — the raw rate currencies trade at between banks — not the rate any specific bank, card network or payment provider will actually apply. Those add their own margin on top, so a real transaction is almost always slightly less favorable than the number shown here.
Can I use this for an actual money transfer or payment?
Use it to plan and compare, not to finalize a real transaction. The bank, card issuer or payment provider handling the actual transfer sets the exchange rate that applies to your money, and it will differ from the reference rate shown here.
How often do exchange rates update?
Live rates refresh each time you load the page, reflecting the exchange rate API's own update schedule (typically once every 24 hours for the free tier this tool uses). They are not real-time, tick-by-tick market rates.
What does "using fallback rates" mean?
It means the live exchange rate feed couldn't be reached — due to a network issue or the API being temporarily down — so the calculator switched to a built-in set of approximate rates instead. The notice stays visible so you don't mistake them for current data.
Is this currency converter free to use?
Yes, completely free, with no account or sign-up, and it runs entirely in your browser.
