How Amazon's fees actually stack

Amazon charges two fees on nearly every FBA sale, and they're easy to conflate. The referral fee is a percentage of your sale price — most categories at 15%, with several categories (clothing, jewelry, beauty, pet veterinary diets) using a different rate entirely, sometimes a cliff that jumps at a specific price point rather than scaling smoothly. It applies whether you fulfill the order yourself or use FBA. The fulfillment fee is a separate, mostly flat dollar amount tied to your item's size and weight tier, charged only when Amazon is doing the picking, packing and shipping — and as of April 17, 2026 it carries its own 3.5% fuel surcharge on top.

The category cliffs are where most sellers get their math wrong. Clothing and beauty/baby products don't scale smoothly from 5% to 17% — they jump the entire rate at a single price point, so a $19.99 item and a $20.01 item can have meaningfully different take-home math despite being two cents apart. Jewelry works differently again: the first $250 is charged at 20%, and only the amount above that is charged at 5% — a tiered structure, not a cliff. This calculator applies the correct rule for whichever category you select, rather than a single flat percentage.

Because the FBA fulfillment fee itself depends on Amazon's own size-tier assignment — which can differ from your own measurement, especially when dimensional weight kicks in — this calculator treats it as an input you provide rather than a number it guesses. The reference ranges shown next to that field are a starting point, not a guarantee; your Seller Central account is the authoritative source for the exact fee on a specific listing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Amazon take per sale?

It depends on the category and whether you use FBA. Most categories pay a 15% referral fee (with a $0.30 minimum per item), plus a separate FBA fulfillment fee if Amazon ships the item for you, plus a 3.5% fuel surcharge on that fulfillment fee. There's no single flat "Amazon cut" — this calculator adds up the specific fees for your category and price.

What is the Amazon referral fee?

A percentage of the item price (plus shipping and gift wrap) that Amazon charges on every sale, regardless of who fulfills the order. It ranges from about 8% to 45% depending on category, with most categories at 15% and a $0.30 minimum per item.

Do I pay referral fees on FBM?

Yes. The referral fee applies whether you fulfill the order yourself (FBM) or use Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA). It's a separate charge from the FBA fulfillment fee, which only applies if Amazon is handling storage and shipping.

Why is my FBA fee higher than the calculator said?

FBA fulfillment fees depend on the exact size and weight tier Amazon assigns your item, which can differ from what you expect — especially if dimensional weight is used instead of actual weight, or if your item lands in a different size tier than you estimated. Q4 peak season, returns processing, and aged inventory surcharges can also add cost this calculator doesn't capture. Add a 5%–12% buffer to your estimate depending on category.

What is the FBA fuel surcharge?

A 3.5% surcharge added on top of the FBA fulfillment fee (not the referral fee), effective April 17, 2026. On a $5.00 fulfillment fee, that's about $0.18 extra per unit.

How is the break-even price calculated?

It's the minimum price at which your revenue covers your cost of goods, referral fee, fulfillment fee and any surcharges you've enabled — with zero profit left over. Price below it and you lose money on every sale; price above it and the difference is your margin.

Does Q4 peak season really change my fees?

Yes. From October 15 through January 14, FBA fulfillment fees typically increase by roughly $0.20 to $1.00 per unit depending on size tier. Toggle the Q4 checkbox to see the impact on your margin.

Is this Amazon FBA calculator free to use?

Yes, completely free, with no account or sign-up, and it runs entirely in your browser.
